Who am I?

My name is Tim van den Berg, also known as TimDrawsStuff on the internet. I am currently studying to become a game artist at the Hogeschool der Kunsten Untrecht (HKU) in the Netherlands. In the last few years I've gained myself an audience on social media which has allowed me to work on some bigger projects for clients, and have also been working on smaller projects with fellow students and friends as well.

What do I do?

I'm a character designer and animator, mainly interested in creating visuals and animations clearly inspired by cartoons or retro games.

 

I am experienced with;  character design, 3D modelling, animation (2D & 3D) and rigging (2D & 3D).

The programs I am most familiar with include: Animate (Adobe), Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Maya and Unity, with light knowledge of Zbrush and Substance Painter.

What can you find here?

On here, you'll be able to find a lot of 2D and 3D work of mine; illustrations, models and animations. There are also a few examples of my work on somewhat bigger projects I have or currently am working on.

Projects

Rhythm Racer

Rhythm Racer a project we worked on as a college assignment, and we are planning to continue working on it in the future. I've worked on this game as the only artist, so everything; animations, props etc. are all made by me. We are big fans of the low poly / retro vibe old arcade racing games have, and I wanted to dive into that feeling for the art of the game, while still making it feel new and original.  I am mostly a character designer, so making and animating cars was something I have never done before, but I ended up on a result that I am really happy with. The environment was also a challenge because I have never really made this before either, but after a lot of trial and error everything turned out satisfactory.

Very Agent

A collaboration between me and the indie studio Clapstool. For this project, I made the 3D models of the first and third person characters, rigged them and made them animation-ready. I also textured the models and made the animations for them. The goal was to make animations which needed to look like they could come from a cartoon, while they also needed to work well in a gameplay scenario (they needed to be responsive).

DanTDM Short

My biggest paid work I have done thus far. This short was made for the Youtuber / content creator Daniel Robert Middleton, mostly known online as DanTDM​ (previously TheDiamondMinecart). He delivered me the clip that he wanted animated, and I made a storyboard, rough animation and did the clean up for the entire short.

Soul Stalker / Radhood

I work on a commission-based basis with the studio Radhood, the creators of games such as Out of Bound Ghost, Synth Beasts and Wanted Shadows). For their game Soul Stalker, I made the character designs, rigs and animations for all of the playable characters.

Paper Pokedex: Scarlet & Violet

This project was completed in my free time between 2022 and 2024. The project consists of 110+ redesigns and animations of Pokemon from the game Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (Game Freak), in an art styled inspired by the Paper Mario series (Nintendo). This really tested my skills in creature / character design, and how to simplify otherwise super complex designs.

Smelton's Melting Mayhem

A projedt I started to get the hang of the Unity program. Thanks to this I can do some basic coding, and able to read a lot more then I could previously. I also did a lot of character design and animation for this project, and I was able to get an understanding of the Unity Animator.

Animation

My main creative interest is making animations. I have always loved seeing my own creations move, and that love has never gone away. In the last few years I have also picked up 3D in both modelling and animation so while I'm still learning a lot, I'm proud of what I have made thus far.

2D Animation

What started of as mostly doing frame by frame animation, nowadays I do more and more rigged animation work for myself, internships and clients. I still love the medium in every shape and form and love to learn more and get better.

3D Animation

I have only been doing 3D animations for a year or two now, but the medium is very interesting to me. Every project I learn something new, be it with rigging or animating a character. I have mainly been doing animations for the use in games, but I would love to actually try and use the medium for a video. All the characters below are modelled, rigged and animated by me.

3D Modelling

I've dabbled in 3D modeling a few years ago, but I've only been trying it out seriously since two years ago. I've also been making my own rigs for less then a year now as well.

Character Illustrations

While I mostly do more cute and stylised work, I do try to come out of my comfort zone form time to time. This is not only fun but I also learn new things, try new things and create something that stands out from the rest of the works I create more often.

Work In Progress
